Is the Venture X Still Worth It in 2026? (The Brutal Truth for Families)

Why We All Fell in Love with the Venture X

When the Venture X launched, it was the "holy grail" for families. For a $395 annual fee that essentially paid for itself via travel credits, you got a premium metal card that treated your entire family like VIPs.

You could add your spouse and even your parents as Authorized Users for $0, and every single one of them got their own Priority Pass membership to bring in guests. It was the ultimate "lounge hack" for large families who didn't want to pay $700+ for an Amex Platinum.

But as of February 2026, Capital One has completely changed their lounge access rules, and the "no-brainer" card for families just became a lot more complicated.

The "February 1st Nerf": What Exactly Changed?

If you haven't checked your benefits lately, the "surprise" at the lounge desk can be expensive. As of February 1, 2026, the Venture X moved from being the most generous card on the market to one of the most restrictive for couples and families.

  • Authorized Users (AUs): They are still free to add to your account for spending, but they no longer get Lounge Access for free. To give an AU lounge privileges, you now have to pay a $125 annual fee per person.

  • The Guest Policy (Capital One Lounges): Primary cardholders and paid AUs now have zero free guests. Every adult guest is $45, and children (ages 2–17) are $25.

  • Priority Pass Changes: This is the biggest blow. Unlike almost every other premium card, the Venture X now offers zero free guests for Priority Pass. Every guest you bring into a partner lounge now costs you $35 per visit.

The "$75,000 Loophole" (Is it actually worth it?)

Capital One added a way to "earn" your guest access back. If you spend $75,000 in a calendar year on your Venture X account (combined primary and AU spend), you unlock 2 free guests at Capital One Lounges and 1 free guest at Capital One Landings.

This is a trap for two major reasons.

1. The Opportunity Cost is Massive

If you have $75,000 in annual spend, putting it all on the Venture X to save a few $45 lounge fees is a losing game.

  • Missing Out on Sign Up Bonuses: That same $75k spend could easily knock out 4 to 6 new Sign-Up Bonuses on cards like the Chase Ink Business Preferred, Amex Platinum, or the Amex Gold. We’re talking about potentially 500,000+ extra points left on the table just to avoid a guest fee.

  • The "Multiplier" Loss: While the Venture X is a solid 2x "catch-all," you’re ignoring the 3x, 4x, or 5x multipliers on cards like the Freedom Flex (rotating categories) or Sapphire Preferred (for dining).

2. The Priority Pass "Blind Spot"

This is the part Capital One doesn't put in the big bold text: Even if you hit the $75k spend, it does NOT unlock free guests for Priority Pass.

You will still be charged $35 per person at every Priority Pass lounge worldwide.

Since the Capital One Lounge network is still relatively small (DFW, IAD, DEN, LAS, JFK), you’ll likely spend most of your travel time in Priority Pass lounges, where your $75k "status" means absolutely nothing for your family.

The "Authorized User" Math: To Pay or Not to Pay?

In 2026, you have to decide if that $125 "Lounge Pass" for your spouse is actually a good deal.

  • The "Break-Even" Scenario: If your spouse travels without you at least 3 times a year, the $125 fee is worth it (3 trips x $45 guest fees = $135).

  • The Family Trap: If you always travel together as a family of four, paying $125 for your spouse to be a "Paid AU" only saves their entry. You are still paying $25 per child every time you walk into a Capital One lounge.

Mary’s Pro-Tip: If you have 2 or more kids, the Venture X is likely no longer your "Best in Slot" card. Instead of paying the new $125 fee just to maybe get into a lounge, you should be routing your spend toward a card that still treats families like VIPs for $0 in guest fees.

The Final Verdict: Who Should Keep the Venture X?

Despite the "nerf," the Venture X isn't a "bad" card… it’s just no longer a "family" card.

Keep it if:

  • You are a Solo Traveler or a Couple who flies 3+ times a year. The $300 travel credit and 10k anniversary miles still make this card a good deal even if you add in the authorized user fee, especially if you transfer those points out to travel partners.

  • You are a Venture X Business holder. Interestingly, the Business version kept its 2 free Priority Pass guests.

Ditch it (or Downgrade) if:

  • You have multiple children. The "per-kid" fees will eat your travel budget alive.

  • You were only holding it for the "Free AUs" to cover your extended family.

Tired of the "Guest Fee" Guessing Game?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the lounge access changes, you aren't alone. The banks are making it harder to track which cards cover your family and which ones are just "coupon books" in disguise.

I’ve put together a Lounge Access Cheat Sheet which breaks down exactly how to get a family of four into a lounge for $0, no matter which airport you’re in.
