The American Express Blue Business Plus Review

The American Express Blue Business Plus Is Not a Perks Card.

It doesn't come with airport lounge access. It doesn't offer statement credits. It doesn't try to impress you with lifestyle benefits.

Instead, it does one thing extremely well:

It earns 2x Membership Rewards points on everyday spending, with no annual fee.

And that makes it one of the most efficient long-term cards in the American Express ecosystem.

Let's break down exactly how this card works, what it offers, and who should consider adding it to their strategy.

If you find it helpful, make sure you're subscribed. I break down credit card strategy, travel redemptions, and how to build a points system that actually works long term.

The Basics

Annual Fee: $0

Rewards Program: American Express Membership Rewards

Current Public Welcome Offer: 15,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $3,000 in the first 3 months

This card earns: 2x Membership Rewards on all eligible purchases up to $50,000 per calendar year 1x points after $50,000

There are no bonus categories to track.

No rotating categories.

No enrollment requirements.

No coupon credits.

Just 2x on everything.

Welcome Offer: Check for Targeted Offers Before You Apply

The standard public welcome offer on the Blue Business Plus is 15,000 points after $3,000 in spend, which is modest compared to most business cards.

But here is something worth knowing before you apply.

American Express occasionally makes targeted offers available on this card, sometimes as high as 50,000, or even 75,000 points, with higher minimum spend requirements.

What makes this especially interesting is that these targeted offers sometimes appear without the standard once per lifetime language that Amex typically uses. That means even if you have held this card before, you may still be eligible for a welcome bonus if you are targeted.

Before applying, always check the Amex website directly with your login to see if a higher targeted offer is available to you. If you know someone who holds this card, a referral link may also surface a higher offer.

This is not a card you get primarily for the welcome bonus. The real value is long term. But it is worth spending 5 minutes checking for a better offer before you apply.

No Annual Fee: Let's Talk Net Cost

There is no annual fee.

That immediately makes this card different from your Amex Platinum and Amex Gold cards.

You don't have to justify credits. You don't have to break even. You don't have to calculate lifestyle math.

If it earns more than 1x on spend you would make anyway, it's a win.

0% Intro APR: A Useful Bonus for Business Owners

The Blue Business Plus includes a 0% introductory APR on purchases for the first 12 months from account opening.

For business owners who need to make a larger purchase and want time to pay it off without interest, this can be a genuinely useful feature. After the intro period, a variable APR applies, so this benefit is best used intentionally rather than as a long term financing strategy.

What the Blue Business Plus Actually Offers

The power of this card is simplicity.

It offers:

  • 2x points on everything up to $50,000 annually

  • Expanded buying power with no preset spending limit

  • 0% intro APR for 12 months

  • Ability to keep Membership Rewards active long term

  • Access to Amex Offers

That's it.

And that's actually really powerful.

Why This Card Is So Powerful

Most premium cards only earn 1x on everyday spending. The Blue Business Plus solves that problem.

Instead of earning 1 point per dollar on gas, insurance, utilities, advertising, random business expenses, and non-bonus personal spend, you earn 2x on everything.

And because it earns Membership Rewards, those points combine with your Amex Platinum, Amex Gold, Amex Business Platinum, and any other Membership Rewards cards you hold.

This is what makes it powerful. It turns your entire ecosystem into a 2x minimum earning structure.

Membership Rewards: Why This Matters

The Blue Business Plus earns Membership Rewards points, the same transferable currency used across American Express personal and business cards.

Points can be transferred to airline and hotel partners. Many transfer at a 1:1 ratio, though there are a few that transfer at different ratios. For a full breakdown of every major bank and their transfer partners in one place, check out my transfer partners guide here:

👉 Read More: What Are Transfer Partners?

Points can be transferred to airline and hotel partners including:

  • Aer Lingus

  • Aeromexico

  • Air Canada Aeroplan

  • ANA

  • Avianca Lifemiles

  • British Airways

  • Cathay Pacific

  • Delta

  • Emirates

  • Etihad

  • Flying Blue

  • Iberia

  • JetBlue

  • Qantas

  • Qatar

  • Singapore KrisFlyer

  • Virgin Atlantic

  • Hilton

  • Choice Privileges

  • Marriott

So when you earn 2x on everyday business spending, you’re effectively earning:

2x transferable airline miles or hotel points.

That’s extremely strong for a $0 annual fee card.

One Important Caveat: Foreign Transaction Fees

The Blue Business Plus charges a 2.7% foreign transaction fee on purchases made abroad or with overseas suppliers.

If you travel internationally, or purchase from foreign vendors, this fee adds up quickly and erases much of the 2x earning benefit on that spend.

For international purchases, use a card with no foreign transaction fee instead, like the Amex Platinum, Amex Gold, or Amex Business Platinum. Keep the Blue Business Plus for domestic spending where it earns without any penalty.

What Cards Pair Well With the Blue Business Plus?

The Amex Blue Business Plus is rarely the headline card in a wallet. It's the infrastructure.

Because it earns 2x Membership Rewards on broad spending, it works best when paired with cards that specialize in high-value categories or premium benefits. Think of it as the base layer in a Membership Rewards strategy.

With the Amex Platinum

The Amex Platinum earns 1x on most spend. The Blue Business Plus earns 2x. Together they eliminate weak earning categories while you keep all the premium benefits of the Platinum card like hotel credits, lounge access, etc.

With the Amex Gold

The Amex Gold earns 4x on dining and groceries. The Blue Business Plus earns 2x on everything else. That's a clean efficient two-card setup to maximize Membership Rewards earnings across all spend.

With the Business Platinum

The Amex Business Platinum gives you premium benefits like airline incidental reimbursement and lounge access. The Blue Business Plus fuels the points at 2x, which complements the Business Platinum perfectly. Together, they form a strong business-owner strategy to maximize your Membership Rewards balance.

Who Should Get the Blue Business Plus?

This card is ideal for small business owners, side hustlers, freelancers, online sellers, content creators, and anyone with legitimate business expenses.

You do not need a formal LLC or corporation. Many sole proprietors qualify for business credit cards. If you have any type of side income, this card is often accessible.

Not sure if you qualify?

I explain exactly who can get a business credit card and how to fill out the application here:

It is especially powerful for people building the Membership Rewards ecosystem, households that already have an Amex Platinum or Gold, and anyone wanting a no annual fee 2x catch-all card.

For families running a side hustle or resale business, this card is a natural fit. If your family already spends on advertising, shipping, or everyday business expenses, those purchases are generating 2x points toward your next family trip without paying a single dollar in annual fees.

What This Card Is Not

The Blue Business Plus is not a luxury perks card.

It’s not a lounge access card.

It’s not a card with statement credits.

It’s not a personal card, it’s a business card.

And it is not a card for international spending given the 2.7% foreign transaction fee.

How I Think About This Card

The Blue Business Plus is one of my favorite no annual fee cards and I always keep one in my wallet.

It earns 2x on all purchases, so this is always my catch-all card for spending that does not fit into a category bonus elsewhere. No thinking required. If another card doesn't earn a bonus on the purchase, then this is the card that I’m using.

I also find this card to be an excellent player 2 card. Because it always earns 2x everywhere, I know that my player 2 is always earning a good return on his spending.

And take it from me, your player 2 will be a lot more willing to participate in travel hacking if you make it easy on them and don't stress them out with always having to use the right card for every purchase.

One card, 2x everywhere, done. I always have one of these in my player 2's wallet.

For families, this is one of the easiest cards to hand to your spouse and say "just use this for everything." No categories to memorize. No credits to track. No annual fee to justify. It just quietly earns 2x on every purchase your family makes that doesn't have a better multiplier on another card. Over a year, that adds up to a meaningful number of points toward your next trip.

If you're serious about maximizing Membership Rewards, this card is almost a default yes. It is one of the smartest companion cards in the entire Amex ecosystem.
